I am sure for most of us, visiting New York in the winter conjures up images of snow-blanketed streets, twinkling Christmas lights and mugs of hot coco… such a romantic vision and one that I eagerly anticipated when I headed over there recently. Needless to say I was disappointed to find that whilst it does snow, it turns to wet dirty slush within minutes and yes the lights are pretty – although rarely was I able to lift my head and observe them – thanks to the bitter wind that made even the most attractive of faces on the street, grimace. However, before I deter you completely, it goes without saying that New York is a great city for every season - it just pays to be prepared. With that in mind, below are some suggestions of things to do when it gets below zero.
Eat Mexican Food - This is kind of a given but nothing warms you up like chili and tequila does. My favorite places are Café Habana, for the corn, La Esquina for the vibe and Barrio Chino for their grapefruit marguerites. Yum!
Visit B & H - This is the place to go if you’re in need of a camera of any kind. The superstore on W34th St is over 70,000 square feet and has a nifty overhead trolley system that delivers your purchase to the front counter. Novelties aside, I saved $400 buying the new Canon G11 here instead of in Sydney. Makes braving the elements worthwhile!
Go Dancing - When just walking a block is like trudging through the tundra, there is little you can do to keep active in this sort of climate. My solution — shots (yes again with the tequila), finding a dance floor and busting some moves. Sway on a Sunday night is fun (if you can get in), or try Sweet Paradise on Canal St if you really want to let loose.
